At the eastern tip of Nepal lies Khotang
district a part with picturesque hills, temples and lakes. Khotang district is
a hidden treasure of our country Nepal. This district is only 550 km away from
the capital city Kathmandu, but due to geographical figure it takes 2 to 3 days
to reach many places where the faces\people of different culture are making their
livelihood. Eastern region including Khotang has one of the beautiful ranges of
snow bedded mountains. Upper it goes from hilly to mountains we see the views
which beholds our breath to capture the unedifying moment.
It is surrounded on its northern side by
the snowcapped mountains and its lush green forests, deep river and beautiful
lakes are simply mesmerizing. Due to the wide variety of altitudinal and climate
conditions, different types of forest are found here. The unique feature of
Khotang district is its inhabitants; in fact their diversity is quite
fascinating. A large number of people practice their ancient beliefs and follow
indigenous religious concepts. The tribes are also synonymous with music and
dance and they display a wide array of dances unique to each tribe. Certain
dances have a religious significance, while other performed for sheer
entertainment.
Panchami, Sa.Chhitapokhari,
Aiselukharka, Baksila, Halesi, Buipa, Diktel, Manevanjyang Mattim, Khotang
Bazaar, Simpani, Chisapani, Arkhoule and Phaktang are the main trade center. In
Khotang district there are many rivers mainly Dudhkoshi, Sunkoshi, Raawa, and
Sapsoo are the main river. Mewa, Toowa, Taap, Taawa, Dictums, Buwa, Chhepe, Beliya,
Makhuwa, Rupuwa, Lapse, Kavre etc. are other rivers. Similarly there are many
beautiful lakes like Baraha Lake, Chhitapokhari etc.
Khotang district is rich in its
ethnicity. The district is inhabited by various ethnic groups like Kirat Rai
(38.74 percent) Chhetri (22.17 percent) Brahmin (8.58 percent) Newar (5.35
percent) Magar (4.27 percent) Dalit(9.45percent) Tamang (4.00 percent) Gurung
(1.27 percent) Sunuwar (0.27 percent)Sherpa (0.78 percent) Majhi (0.36 percent)
Terai ethnic group (1.28 percent)and Others (3.41 Percent).(District profile Khotang,2007).
There are so many important historical
and religious places in Khotang district. Halesi, Tuwachung Jayajum, Baraha Lake,
Rupakot and Tyamke are the famous destinations of Khotang district. It is
equally famous for the Kirat Rai culture, Sakela dance, Maarunee Nach, Newari
culture, handicraft, pashmina and verities of local dishes.
